Adding to what Barb said, don't forget that content placed within the text frame on a master page does not show up on the main page. Many use this text frame to hold notes about the master page or the document. If you want a background graphic, be sure to click outside the text frame border, in the page margin, on the master page. It's not clear what you are asking, but I'm betting that you are seeing a typical problem where blank pages appear at the end of a chapter, or are not deleting as expected. This commonly happens when one chapter, say, ends on a right-hand page, and the next chapter is set to start on a right-hand page. You can't have two right-hand pages in a row, so FM must insert an empty left-hand page between the two chapters. It really has no choice. Forgive me if I am incorrect on this, and just misunderstanding the question, but I'm wondering if maybe you misunderstand how the Replace Font pod works. How many fonts, listed in the Fonts pod, do you need to replace? In the Replace Font pod, are you trying to click on each Location where a font is listed as used and change it individually, or just entering the new font in Replace With to them all in one pass? If you want to replace fonts in multiple documents, open them. Then, in the Fonts tab, choose "Select: All open docs." To replace fonts, simply click on the font you want to replace in the Fonts pod. (Sadly, FM does not seem to allow selecting multiple at once, but how many can there be?) Then open the Replace Font tab, select the new font family that you want in Replace With. Then click Apply. It will fix all the font instances listed in the window below, all at once. Anyway, I'm probably not telling you something you don't already know. I'm just having trouble envisioning having so many fonts needing replacement that it would take hours to follow the above steps, and wondered if maybe you thought you had to change each instance listed in Location individually. If you do have so many fonts that it would take hours to replace them, maybe it would be easier to go into maker.ini, in the section, and specify your substitutions there-- letting FrameMaker do them all when you load the documents. Setting pagination to Make Page Count Even can add a blank page, when there is only an odd number of pages of text. Probably the most common reason people post with confusion about blank pages, though, is when they have set a chapter to Delete Empty Pages and FrameMaker keeps adding blank pages to the end of it. It's because that chapter ends on, say, a right page and the next chapter is set to start on a right page. So FrameMaker has to add a blank page to the previous chapter to make it happen. Your original message is confusing. On one hand, you say that FrameMaker "now opens Illustrator 2015 when I double click the eps image." Then, later in the message, you are asking about associating an executable with the "Edit with Illustrator" command, presumably the right-click context menu command. Double clicking a graphic and choosing a menu command are two different things. Which is giving you the problem? Or both? (Note also that the Edit with... commands for Illustrator and Photoshop are greyed out on my copy of FM 10. If I remember right, they are only workable in the full Tech Comm Suite in FM 10.) In your most recent post, you ask if there is a plugin which can change the graphics editor. If you installed the WS Utilities plugin from West Street Consulting, they add an "Open with Illustrator" (that's "Open," not "Edit," as built into FM) context menu item that lets you set the third party editor. Perhaps you have installed this utility and set the third party program? If so, right-click on an EPS graphic in FrameMaker and find this context menu entry: "Open This Graphic (Please Click Me!)." I went back and looked at this some more. I've been popping two-column wide graphics-with-captions into my documents for ages, using the AutoText plugin. I assumed they were set up as described previously, but I looked more closely at this, and I amusing a one-cell table (with table title holding the caption) in my documents, and everything stretches fine across both columns. It turns out that you don't need to put the image and caption or figure header in a separate paragraph to make both image and title stretch across both columns. Here's the trick. Insert a single-cell table on a page with a master page style that has only one column. Turn on the table title. The table title will stretch across the whole page. The table cell may not. If necessary, control-click the table cell to select it and drag the right- or left-hand borders to the edge of the column, so that the cell is also frame wide. Now, you have a single-cell table with title that is as wide as two columns. Set up your Anchor paragraph format in the table cell (to hold the graphic) and your caption or figure header format in the table title area. Save the table as a new table format, possibly calling it "2-column." Now, you can go to any two-column page and insert a table with "2-column" format and it (and title) will stretch across both columns automatically. ... View more

If I understand correctly, the simple answer should be to go into the Paragraph Designer, on the Pagination tab, and set the paragraph format to be "Across All Columns" for your figure heading paragraph format. This should make it stretch across both columns. If you are using the common method of placing graphics in a one-cell table, and using the table title to hold either the caption or figure heading, there does seem to be a quirk, though. Placing a two-column wide graphic stretches fine across both columns, but the table title (caption) seems to want to stay in only one column. In that case, you will have to turn off table titles and put the caption or figure heading in a separate paragraph that either follows or precedes the paragraph holding the graphic. You can change the default font of new documents. There are three files you might want to look at-- Custom, shellnew.fm, and txttmplt. From the FrameMaker help file: "Change templates for blank paper and text files You can change the custom template for blank paper so that it contains the formats you want. The template can contain the same formats as any other template, except for the page layout. The master page layout, number of columns, and margins are determined when you create the blank paper documents. You can also change the custom template that FrameMaker uses when you open text files. Note: You can change the filename that FrameMaker looks for when it creates a blank paper document or opens a text file. Change the template for blank paper 1. Here are a couple of methods: Native to FrameMaker: 1. No template is necessary. 2. Click on a paragraph that uses the correct style in a document in the book to select it, such as Body. 3. Select Edit> Copy Special> Paragraph Format. This copies the paragraph tag name and formatting to the clipboard. 4. Use Find/Change: Find the Paragraph Tag you want to change (Boddy). Change "By Pasting" and select the book. Select Change All. FM will find and change Boddy paragraphs to Body and apply Body formatting to them. 5. Done. NOTE: Also, there is a potential error to watch for in that, when FrameMaker searches for the Boddy paragraph tag, it will also find other tags with Boddy in the name, such as BoddyNew, Old Boddy, etc. So it may grab and change similarly named tags you don't want to change.
